Benitochromis sp. “Iloloma” – From Shadow to Sapphire

Following the underwater video footage, I would like to properly introduce Benitochromis sp. “Iloloma”.

Underwater, this species does not immediately stand out by bright colours. In its natural habitat, it appears rather modest and discreet. But once transferred to the aquarium, a completely different fish emerges.

The brownish-green base colour transforms into a light grey body, crossed by six deep black vertical bars. Depending on the mood and behaviour of the fish, the entire body can take on a stunning metallic blue sheen — a colour that is undeniably most intense in the female.

This remarkable species was brought to Europe by Uwe Werner and myself during our trips in 2013 and 2015. Sadly, by 2026, Benitochromis sp. “Iloloma” has almost completely disappeared from the hobby.

A real shame — because this is without question a species well worth keeping, both for its subtle beauty and its fascinating behavior.

Not loud. Not flashy. But breathtaking when given the right conditions.

Some fish don’t shout for attention — they reward patience.
