Type species of the genus Ctenochromis. In some of the websites Ctenochromis pectoralis is listed as being extinct. I found them in the Ruvu river affluent of the Pangani Drainage, shown here.
The Pangani Drainage is the type locality of this species at the village Korogwe. The biggest concentration of this species is found north of Korogwe up to Lake Jipe
