It is thought by a fair number of people that the genus Corydoras is not monophyletic and almost certainly needs to be split up into it's constituent species groups. Whether these arise as subspecies of full species is uncertain and fairly arbitrary.
As of this writing (2024) there are more species of Corydoras than have been described. A lot more. Two systems developed into a de fact standard: C Numbers coordinated initial by Lothar Seegers, and supplanted by the Aqualog people - who published all of Seegers photos from a lifetime collecting. CW numbers are coordinated by Ian Fuller.
