It was thought the banded pygmy sunfish belonged to the cichlid family but, researchers Jordan, Hay, and Gilbert felt the banded pygmy sunfish was actually an intermediate between the pirate perch and the Centrarchid family of sun fishes. Thus, the pygmy sun fish were placed in their own Family: Elassomatidae.
