Okaloosa County, Florida

After such a rewarding day exploring the clear, sandy creeks of Okaloosa County, Florida last week, I couldn’t resist returning to the area for a weekend of further exploration. While my previous trip followed spring-fed seepage creeks draining into Choctawhatchee Bay, this visit focused on similar systems flowing instead into the Yellow River. Because these outflows remain freshwater, the creeks are far less isolated and support a noticeably richer diversity of species than their salt-influenced counterparts. Although the weekend involved more scouting and driving than snorkeling, the time I did spend in the water was a true gift; unexpectedly warm for winter, crystal clear, and teeming with life.
