2022:
I finished “Species & Names” on my 93rd birthday and will not be writing any more. So, “hodie mihi, cras tibi” (“my turn today, yours tomorrow”). Horace (Quintus Horatius Flaccus), an outstanding poet and satirist under the emperor Augustus, put it this way in his Epistles. “You have played enough, eaten and drunk enough.” Now “tempus abire tibi est” (“it is time for you to go away.”). What mainly affects my decision is that about seven years ago my wife contracted late Alzheimer's and I have been taking care of her at home since then. It is, of course, ridiculous - a 93 year old man taking care of a 94 year old woman - but I swore I would do it until either I died first or became unable to do it physically. I may, however, on occasion write or comment on a post.
