Killifish Conservation Infrastructure Project

For decades attempts have been made to take a census of what killifish are held in captivity. There has been resistance from several fronts for this idea and at this point it seems clear those interested should just do it.

At that point we'll have a better idea of what's critically endangered. Then we need to step up and do a better job of species conservation than we've done before.

Killifish are a focus but not the sole focus, this first effort is catered more to small tanks and small fishes but not exclusively limited to killifish.

Crowdsourcing conservation

  • Large institutional organizations could house one large tank, curated by either staff or volunteers.

  • Small to medium businesses can house smaller installations but can still conserve a single species, just probably a smaller one.

  • Local resources can be used where available. For example in Norway a club there built and maintain a clubhouse where tanks are housed as a cooperative with weekly club meetings held there. An initiative is underway to do this in Toronto in the downtown core.
